Shawn,<br>I see farm wagons all over the place. Why buy new when you should be able to find a good used trailer at an auction or through an ad in a newspaper. Another place to look is a welding shop that fabricates for farmers. The most difficult part is the front axle. It may be necessary to take the mechanicals off a rusted out cotton trailer or the like. You would be surprised at what one of those old time farm welders can come up with when they have a little time.

I use my tractor to pull relatively light loads. For example, I use it to pull my unladen tandum axle trailer to and from it's parking place in the South Forty. I also use it to pull my wood trailer in and out of the woods. The most I ever carry is a half cord and I don't go very fast. Finally, I use it to pull a small utility trailer around my place when I am picking up rocks. I have not had any problems. I find the three point hitch convenient to use. I can back up to a trailer and slip the ball under the hitch and simply pick up. Just as easy to unhitch. I dont think the trailers put as much weight on the thee point as a rotary cutter in the raised position. Bottom line - not an issue as far as I am concerned but please take it easy!

Just about as old as I am. Most were made in the 40s. The good news is that they run forever, there are a lot of them out there, they take Cat 1 implements, parts are available, they are simple to work on, and they are generally available in the $2,000 to $3,000 range. In there day they were revolutionary. A lot of farmers feed their families with one. Most of the deisel compacts available today will run circles around an 8N or 9N. DK,<br>Start back from how much fuel you use a month. 100 plus gallons? Then a gravity feed tank with filter is the way to go. Your bulk fuel dealer will deliver tax free off-road red whenever you need it. Anything less and you are going to be hauling it yourself from the co-op. To do this you will need a truck mounted tank and pump. Tractor Supply Company (TSC) and similiar suppliers can fix you up. See [www.tractorsupplyco.com/catalog/truckacc/p223.htm] for starters (also p224 & p225). You can get hand pumps and 12 volt electric pumps. You can use these pumps in truck mounted tanks and barrels. Two key considerations - keep no more than a month's fuel on hand and filter at every transfer.

Bruce, I agree with Steve. A tractor is not a bulldozer. Figure out what you want done and hire a dozer to do it all at once or over time. Same with the backhoe. Those things get used hard and they have a lot that can go wrong. The ones that you see for sale cheep are useually used up. Unless you have a lot of backhoe work to do you are money ahead hiring the job out. Use your tractor to grade and maintain.

The posts about problems hooking up 3 point implements focused on rotary cutters. They only have one wheel in the back and weigh too much to pick up on the front. You have to bring a tractor to a rotary cutter with some precision. On the other hand, a 3 point finish mower is on four wheels. You can bring the tractor to the mower and then manually finess to allign the pins and top link. Parking the mower on a flat hardstand helps. Mostly, however, it just take practice.

John Deere makes good stuff. You will not have any problems with one of their products. However, you will find them to be somewhat pricy when purchased new. Bush Hog Squeeler is another premium product. I have a Howse 500 (5') and it gives me good service. King Kutter is a widely marketed brand with a good reputation. Most independent tractor dealers and repair shops carry one or two lines of equipment. A lot of very good stuff is made by small companies with limited distrubution areas. Implements are heavy and shipping cost avoidance favors the locals in this highly competitive market. I would shop some independents and see what they have to offer. Ask for the names and numbers of customers you can contact. You may find that a Deere is more than you need. Good luck.

I agree with Lee and Stanley. Mow what you can with a rotary cutter. You will be surprised at how fast the pasture grass comes back. As for the larger saplings, I would wait until the leaves are off this fall and then cut them off as close to the ground as you can with a chain saw. No bigger than they are the roots should rot in a couple of years and the stumps should come out without much effort. If the stumps bush up in the spring hit them with Roundup and wait a couple of weeks for the roots to die before you mow. If you have a loader on your tractor you can try to push the lager trees over. Depending on soil conditions, etc., they may push over and uproot. Simply put the loader bucket against the tree and ease in. If the tree topples, fine. If not, use the chan saw. Don't abuse your equipment by ramming trees or stumps with your loader. I don'y know how you feel about trees but you may some desireable species among your volunteers. Would not hurt to have someone who knows something about them advise you on what should go and what are worth saving.

Rob,<br>Before I would buy a tractor or a skid steer I would seek out a good dozer operator, show him what I want, and get an estimate. A dozer can do everything you have listed (except, perhaps large stumps which require a back hoe). 15 acres are not much and if they are as you have described the job will not take long. Buy a compact suitable for mowing and maintaing your place after the clearing is done. Something that can pull a box blade and a rotary cutter. Have your dozer operator leave a pile of top soil someplace. You can use your tractor and front end loader to fill in and dress out the depressions that will show up after it rains a couple of times (stump holes). A dozer operator can also push up burn piles for you and if he is on site when you light the match he can also tend the fires, something that no one in his right mind would do with a tractor or skid steer. You can rent this kind of equipment but, unless you are a skilled operator yourself, you will get a more cost effective result by hiring the job out and supervising. I have been cleaning up 21 wooded acres in the Ozarks. Of all the options, and I have tried them all, hiring a dozer worked best for me.

A posting there may get you some additional help.<br>FYI most three point implements interchange between tractors reguardless of manufacturer so you are not stuck with John Deere. Your tractor has a Cat 1 hitch. Any implement made to fit a Cat 1 hitch will fit your tractor. Bush Hog and John Deere implements are top-of-the-line and priced accordingly. You may be able to find what you need for less at an independent dealer or tractor repair shop. Lots of good used stuff out there as well. Caviat empratur (ot however that is spelled).
